For our first rehearsal, I have picked the Midsummer Night’s Dream Scherzo as one repertoire selection. This piece is notorious for its devilish flute part, but other instrumentalists are often asked to play it in auditions, too! Here are the passages I’ve seen come up on audition sheets, and what we’ll focus on next week.
FLUTE: two measures before Rehearsal P (m. 329) to the end. Occasionally, the trilled eighth note passage at Rehearsal B (m. 49), and the exposed bit 8 measures before F (m. 130)
CLARINET: beginning to Rehearsal B (m. 49)
VIOLIN 1: the BSO asks for the whole thing!
VIOLA: Measure 17 (the first thing you play) through to Rehearsal D (measure 94)
CELLO: Rehearsals C-D (mm. 70-94) and N-O (mm. 287-314)
