The second offering on the menu for this Saturday’s rehearsal is the second movement of Pines of Rome. The Boston Ballet Orchestra has requested the iconic trumpet solo at their upcoming audition, and I humbly obey. Our rehearsal venue (University Lutheran Church on 66 Winthrop St, Cambridge) has incredible acoustics and a great loft should we venture to take things offstage, as Respighi intended. With the exception of the Bass Trombone’s audition excerpt at the 5/4 bar that echoes the trumpet solo, this selection was made for the enjoyment and discovery of all involved… and to give our mighty flute players a break post-Mendelssohn!
